Justices extend gun owner rights nationwide


Colleagues,


The US Supreme Court today ruled in a 5-4 decision that the second amendment applies to the states. In 2008, the court had ruled that the second amendment applied to individual gun ownership in the Heller case. But that case only applied to federal statutes. NCISS filed an amicus curiae brief in the 2008 case in support of the view that individuals had a right to bear arms. The significance of this decision is that it applies to the much more significant regulation of weapons that occurs at the state and local level.
