Your Immediate Action Needed on Critical Bill Amendment

Colleagues,

Senator Diane Feinstein (D-CA) is proposing an amendment to the financial reform bill S-3217 currently on the Senate floor. The amendment would restrict “credit” checks for employment purposes for both background screening and “adverse actions.”

Please contact your Senators immediately, as we cannot predict exactly when (or if) the amendment will come up.

Here is a suggested message:

“Please oppose Senator Feinstein’s employment credit check amendment to the financial reform bill S-3217. The issue is far too important to be considered as an amendment on the Senate floor. It deserves hearings and committee consideration because it would have a substantial impact on businesses. Employers do not conduct credit checks unless there is a reason to do so. Although there are some exceptions in the bill, it is impossible for Congress to anticipate each and every instance in which a credit check is appropriate. As a licensed private investigator, I am most concerned about the ban on using credit checks prior to taking “adverse actions” against an employee. The checks can be valuable investigative tools when trying to uncover embezzlement or other crimes against employers.“

There is no time to write letters. I urge you to call your Senator’s office immediately.
